American Community Survey (ACS) Data in Southern California A First Look at 2017-2021

On Dec. 8, the Census Bureau released the latest American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year data (2017-2021). The 5-year ACS represents data collected over a period which includes time on either side of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This offers a unique advantage to study estimates for smaller geographic areas (e.g., cities, counties, and neighborhoods) and population subgroups (e.g., workers). Drawing on the current ACS data and comparing it to data from the previous five-year ACS, SCAG staff have computed several key variables for the local jurisdictions in the SCAG region.

SCAG Adopts Resolution on Water Action

On Oct. 6, 2022 the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) formally affirmed the drought and water shortage emergency in Southern California and called on local and regional partners to join together to adopt an “all of the above” approach to addressing the region’s water challenges and catalyzing opportunities across a six-county region that’s home to more than 19 million people.

GO HUMAN MINI-GRANTS ARE BACK! APPLY FOR UP TO $15K BY 4/29/22

The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is now accepting applications for the 2022 Go Human Mini-Grants Program.   

With support from the California Office of Traffic Safety, the Mini-Grants Program funds creative, community-driven traffic safety and engagement projects that meet the needs of people most harmed by traffic injuries and fatalities. SCAG will award up to $15,000 to 25 selected projects. Applications are due on Friday, April 29th, 2022, and all projects will be implemented between Monday, June 13th and Wednesday, August 31st, 2022.

SCAG Supports City, County Efforts To Develop Plans To Meet Long-Term Housing Needs

The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is committed to providing the 197 local jurisdictions it represents the support and assistance needed to complete their long-term housing plans, as mandated by the state.

Although an initial deadline has passed for jurisdictions to adopt a compliant housing element, the process of developing, completing and securing approvals for such a plan can be a taxing one, requiring months of outreach, research, planning and coordination.  Currently, 131 jurisdictions have submitted a first draft housing element to the state’s Housing and Community Development Department, 48 jurisdictions have submitted a second draft, and six had their housing elements approved by the state.

This month, SCAG’s Go Human program is preparing to kick off a new round of Mini-Grant funding to support community-led projects that help people move safely in their neighborhoods. Mini-Grants provide up to $10,000 in funding for awardees to carry out safety and engagement strategies.

SCAG President Lauds Passage of Infrastructure Bill

Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) President Clint Lorimore today praised Congress for its passage of a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, the impact of which will be felt for generations to come as regions such as ours address pressing challenges in transportation, energy, broadband access and the environment.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, passed by the House on Friday night and expected to be signed soon by President Biden, includes a five-year reauthorization of the nation’s surface transportation programs as well as $550 billion in new spending.
